Woman loses $300,000 to Nigerian scammer on Christian dating site
A 66-year-old woman was scammed out of $300,000 by a man she met on ChristianMingle.com. Police say a Nigerian man pretending to be British befriended the unidentified San Jose woman, then later wooed her with phone calls, texts and a flower delivery, geobeats says.
After the man suspected he had her in his grasp, he asked her for a $300,000 loan to assist him in his start-up business. Eager to help, she withdrew money from her retirement account and refinanced her home.
The man, who used a fake photo on the dating site, also created a fake website for his fraudulent business that listed the victim’s name as a company authority.
The woman caught on when she was asked to wire $200,000 more and the money went to a bank in Turkey. She alerted authorities and it led to the arrest in Turkey of an associate of the Nigerian man.
The woman was able to get the $200,000 back, but she lost $300,000 and the scammer remains at large.
